The Charlotte Business Journal just reported that the Charlotte based Albemarle Corporation has announced that they will be making huge cutbacks in their Charlotte Area operations. The CBJ stated that Albemarle’s Business Park operations in North Charlotte will be reduced, their “investments” in their Lithium-Hydroxide Processing Plant in Chester, SC will be “deferred” and the Kings Mountain mining operations will be “prioritized.” Many layoffs of personnel will be announced soon.
Folks, you don’t have to be a financial genius to understand that if your company headquarters is being cutback and your lithium processing plant is being cutback; your lithium mining operations that feed the processing plant that feeds the corporate operations will be the FIRST to feel the cutbacks.
This is surely bad news for Kings Mountain and Cleveland County’s Economic Development prospects. Along with that $6 Million gamble the Commissioners made on a new shell building that has come up “Snake Eyes.” With the new Justice Center Project and the EMS/Rescue Squad fiasco that lost $12 Million in expectations and brags; Cleveland County is “hurting” in ways that the public does not yet know.
