This article is a follow-up to my recent article admonishing everybody to NOT pass a stopped school bus.
The 7 AM TV news this morning was lit up with the news that an Elementary School student in Cabarrus County, NC had been hit yesterday evening by a car just as he was exiting his school bus. The early report was the school bus was NOT involved in the accident.
Later the news was more informative. The child was indeed hit by a car, a Honda, on a stretch of country road with a history of speed related accidents and deaths. The Cabarrus County District Attorney has not yet decided on what charges, if any, will be lodged against the drivers of the car or the school bus. The identity of the student or his family have not been made public at this time.
We have probably hundreds of miles of such country roads in Cleveland County. Are we only such an accident, just waiting to happen??? And the only thing saving our children is LUCK? Pure and simple LUCK!!!
Now I truly understand why Mr. and Mrs. Billy Scruggs were so distressed when Cleveland County Schools changed their school bus routes such that their grandson would be dropped off on just such a dangerous road. 226 near Grover-instead of near the Scruggs’ home. A route that the bus had taken for over 30 years before they decided to change the bus route-because of retaliation against the Scruggs family for making a complaint. And the School Board, especially Jo Boggs, did absolutely NOTHING!!! Mr. Scruggs on several occasions at school board meetings, accused Boggs of “telling bald-faced lies!” This is all public record. It is also a public record that Jo Boggs did NOT run for reelection to the School Board in 2020.
Folks, I don’t now about YOU, but I do know one thing about ME. I will never pass a stopped school bus. Hitting a child getting on or off of a school bus may be a Million to One chance, but that chance is too high for me to take. No matter how much of a hurry I may be in. And, if YOU take that chance and hit a child, YOU had better hope that I am not on the jury.
