As you will see, the CCS School Board under Chairman Robert Queen and members Ron Humphries, Greg Taylor, Joel Shores, Rodney Fitch and now joined by Walter Scott Spurling have accelerated CCS’s Educational performance from just “bad” to a full-fledged “disaster.”

National attention is being focused on the number of high school graduates who cannot read at a proficient level. This should alarm ALL of us! I have a personal interest in this subject as having worked (many years) as a para-professional in a formal reading program in Gaston County Schools.
To my knowledge Cleveland County Schools have never had a curriculum that includes a stand-alone reading program where nothing is taught in a class for one-hour segments each day except for reading and writing skills.
Cleveland County Schools employs many teacher assistants to tutor or babysit kids who have learning disabilities, who are low achievers or they’re unruly kids, etc. This is NOT a reading class where reading is taught exclusively.
Three former US Presidents (in a row) called for kids to learn in early childhood education during their presidencies. These Presidents were Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. This is now the year 2023 and kids are graduating from school with a 12-year diploma in education in their hands and they can’t read and write in cursive handwriting. This is a FAILURE due to basic educational skills not being taught in our schools.
Our present Cleveland County School Board (CCSB) doesn’t have an appetite nor desire to introduce the basic and fundamental skills in education of reading, writing and math being taught in our schools.
This statement is intended for all nine of our CCSB officials: Get YOUR minds focused on educating the children in Cleveland County Schools! ALL of you spend your time on issues that do NOT promote educating our children. The fruits of your labor as school board members can be seen with every graduating class who have earned a 12-year degree in reading, writing and math. Have they really earned a degree or are you just sending them out in the world WITHOUT a BASIC EDUCATION???

We want no more corruption like what was found out about the Catawba Casino, the bribed sale of our hospital for 2 cents on the dollar, endless sales tax increase referendums, endless property revaluations where Cleveland County has deployed drones to peep into our bedroom windows looking for whatever it is that they can use to raise property taxes over. And it goes on and on.
