A trusted source has provided an email notification to the Cleveland Community College Faculty and Staff From CCC President Dr. L. Steve Thornburg that Thornburg has notified the CCC Board of Trustees that Thornburg will “retire” at the end of 2017.
Trusted sources have also reported that Thornburg, at the May 23, 2017 Called Meeting of the Trustees, tearfully begged the Board not to fire him immediately and to allow him to resign at the end of the year. And the Board has foolishly agreed to allow Thornburg to so. All this in the middle of the growing scandals at CCC, The Cleveland County Board of Education as well as the Cleveland County Commissioners.
We will continue our investigation and reporting into these scandals as it appears that more heads need to roll at CCC and elsewhere. Surely Thornburg will not find a do nothing high paying job at Gardner Webb as former CCS Superintendent Dr. Bruce Boyles was allowed to do so CCS would have a “sacrificial lamb” to cover-up some early CCS scandals regarding fraud and misuse of school credit cards.

Re: Retirement
For nearly 27 years I have had the honor, privilege, and challenge to serve as the president of Cleveland Community College. Earlier today in an email (see below) to the Board of Trustees, I informed the trustees of my plans to retire at the end of 2017.
Working with our faculty and staff over the years has been a true joy. Your commitment to serving students and helping community residents improve their lives shows a remarkable dedication and determination to make Cleveland County stronger and the opportunities for our citizens greater and greater. You are the heart and soul of CCC and I will miss our interactions and working together to help students be successful.
With much excitement, some sadness, and a little uncertainty, I look forward to moving on into the next phase of my life. I will miss working with you; watching our students grow and develop; experiencing our community’s improvements; and, being a part of the wonderful team that is Cleveland Community College.I wish for each of you and the College much continued success. I treasure the opportunity to work with you through the end of the year. As I have done at every graduation at which I presided as president, I would like to close with the following blessing for my family –– the faculty and staff of Cleveland Community College:
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
