Republicans Appoint Bridges for Commissioner on First Ballot –But Forget to Remind themselves to get out the vote for Republican School Board Candidates!!! –Report by Robert A. Williams (Unaffiliated)

Home grown Republican Doug Bridges of the Bridges BBQ family beat out two Attorneys and a Community College Big Wheel to obtain a majority vote of the Cleveland County Republican Party Executive Board vote on the first round at a special called Republican Party Meeting held at the Commissioners Chambers at 7:00 PM October 30, 2017.

According to North Carolina law Doug Bridges will be officially appointed to the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners at the Commissioners next business meeting to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Commissioner Jason Falls. Also. according to NC law the Falls seat that Doug Bridges will be appointed to will face election at the next General Election for Commissioners. Which is 2018.

For everybody’s information the Falls seat, a four year term , is up in 2018 anyway. That means that after Doug Bridges fills the vacancy until 2018, He may seek re-election for a regular four year term.

Not so for Commissioner Ronnie Whetstine, who was appointed to fill the vacancy of the Ronnie Hawkins seat when Hawkins died only eight days into a four year term. According to the NC Law that was in effect at the time Whetstine was appointed to fill the Hawkins vacancy, Whetstine would have had to face election at the next general election, which would have been this year-2017. And if Whetstine had won this election he could have filled the remainder of Hawkins term which ran to 2020. I brought this to the attention of the Board of Elections and the issue was taken to the General Assembly where the law was changed to clarify that Whetstine would have to Stand for Election in 2018 to fill the Hawkins seat which expires in 2020. This means Commissioner Whetstine, if he stands for re-election, will be seeking a two year term.

Now the 2018 Election year for Commissioners will look like this:

Eddie Holbrook is up for election for a four year term.
Doug Bridges will be up for his own four year term.
Ronnie Whetstine will be up for a two year term.

In hindsight, the Republicans and Ronnie Whetstine made a big mistake pushing for Whetstine to stand for Election in 2018 instead of 2017 as the NC law clearly stated. Had Whetstine stood for election in 2017 and won, he would have served as commissioner until 2020. Also, If Whetstine had stood for election in 2017 this off year election would have drawn much more attention among voters, virtually insuring the newly partisan school board elections would be won by Republicans. And since that is very likely anyway, the four Republican School Board Candidates would have helped Whetstine win his election bid for Commissioner. A win-win for Republicans across the slate.

Of course all this miscalculation by Republicans can be easily turned around with them turning out to vote for their School Board Candidates: Danny Blanton, Rodney Fitch, Robert Queen and Kevin Whisnant on 2017 Election Day, November 7, 2017. Although the Cleveland County Republican Party Chairman Joel Shores ran an orderly and efficient meeting to take care of the business of appointing Doug Bridges to the County Board of Commissioners, neither Shores nor any of the other Republican Executive Board members remembered to remind everyone that the 2017 Election day is only eight days away and to turn out to vote for the Republican School Board Candidates. I would say the Republicans should be burning up their telephones calling and reminding fellow Republicans to get out to vote for the Republican School Board Candidates. That’s how politics works and the Cleveland County Republican Party should get up to speed right here at home and right now to elect Republicans at every election and for every office. Or do they expect us Unaffiliated to do their job for them?
